Keepers Clothing selected a neglected former banking hall occupying a corner of Austin’s busiest intersection for their new store, the first significant upscale retail in the city’s resurgent downtown. The store’s plan frames views to neighboring buildings and the Texas State Capitol. An abundance of natural light allowed for the use of darker fixtures and flooring, which also helped to minimize glare. In environmentally conscious Austin, sustainability played an important role in the design of the store. Existing windows were tinted with ceramic films to minimize heat gain and UV damage to clothing.
Two-story-tall travertine columns from the former banking hall were polished and retained in place. The fixtures were built of clear sealed eucalyptus plywood, a by-product of the “trash tree,” and all the lighting is fluorescent or metal halide. The result is a low maintenance, visually strong store that is easy to merchandise and operate.
